Here’s something I wasn’t aware of: Sedo will run a portfolio auction for you through it’s auction system. That is if you have good domains at a good reserve.
For an example, take a look at the Richard Whitney Portfolio Auction going on right now. Look quickly, because it ends at 12:30 EDT today.
Whitney’s auction has a number of good deals that are (currently) priced very nicely. And 29 of the 30 domains have already met their reserve. There are a lot of good product names on the list.
Many of the domains would be better as plurals, but are still good domains for development. For example: baseballscore.com, hockeyticket.com, basketballscore.com, athleticshoe.com. All of these domains are currently $510 or less.
Some other domains in the auction that are currently at very attractive prices:
Scratchoffs.com $220
AutoInspections.com $399
Doodling.com $499
CategoryKiller.com $411
GuitarClinic.com $80

The CEO of auDA, Chris Disspain, has been nominated as the ccNSO Council nominee to the ICANN Board. With no other candidates his approval was approved and his nomination will be formalised on 19 October at the ccNSO Councul meeting.
Disspain has been CEO of auDA (.AU Domain Administration), the policy and regulatory body for .AU, for around ten years and has been an active participant in ccNSO and wider ICANN activities for much of that time.
His nomination came from Keith Davidson, the former Executive Director of InternetNZ, manager of .NZ, and was seconded by a number of registry representatives.
“InternetNZ has a strong appreciation for Mr Disspain’s leadership of the ccNSO since its inception, and believes he has the necessary skills and understanding of the ICANN model and processes to make a valuable and solid contribution to the ICANN Board,” said Keith Davidson, External Relations Director for InternetNZ.
The ccNSO has two representatives on the Board.

ICANN has released two documents related to the number of new top level domain names that may be added to the web per year.
The first document is technical in nature, covering how many gTLDs can be added to the root in any year. I previously wrote that it was determined 1,000 new TLDs could be added to the root in a year without problems. But after reading this report it’s clear that 1,000 was used as a maximum number based on the process bottleneck for approving new TLDs. Could the root scale higher? Possibly, but the report doesn’t really consider it.
The second document discusses how many new TLDs could be added in a year based on the application and delegation process. It is much more limiting. It suggests 200-300 may be added per year. But it also shows a scenario where close to 1,000 could be added.
Based on the current status of new top level domain discussions in the ICANN community, it’s possible we’ll see the first new TLDs added in 2012.

If you’re going to register a domain name including a famous trademark, you probably shouldn’t brag about it. Like this guy did in a blog post after registering Starbucks.im.
“I recently picked up a few good .im top level domain names including starbucks.im. Though this particular domain extension represents the county code top level domain of the Isle of Man in Western Europe, this domain name is quickly getting picked up by companies wanting to offer instant message services as well as a great domain to describe who you are.”
It’s pretty easy to prove bad faith when you register a domain if you tell the world.
.IM has its own ccTLD dispute policy outside of UDRP. So if Starbucks wants this domain it can probably just follow that process. Or heck, it can sue the guy in the U.S. where he’s based.
But my guess is a nice cease & desist letter and a cup of hot coffee would do the trick.

Moniker’s extended auction from DOMAINfest Prague ends Wednesday, and SnapNames’ October Showcase Auction is underway and includes 16 three letter .com domain names.
The extended auction includes 890 domain names with starting bids and reserves ranging from $300 up to $6,470,590 for WorkatHome.com. A handful of domains have bids, most notably supplement.com for $61,330. AppetizerRecipes.com has a $3,050 bid and TVaccessories.com has two bidders with a current bid of $625.
As for the monthly auction, it includes 175 names ranging from $200 reserves up to $250,000. The three letter .com domains have reserve ranges as low as $5,000-$10,000. There are many three letter .org domain names; four have received bids but are below their reserves.
This is the first time I’ve used the new SnapNames interface that was released a couple weeks ago. I used to have lots of problems with my browser freezing while using the site; now it loads much faster and is trouble free.

The Top 10 ‘.HK‘ Website Competition for 2010 has opened. The competition aims to recognise outstanding ‘.HK‘ websites that have innovatively leveraged the Internet and social media platforms to enhance their businesses.
The competition is organised by the Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited (HKIRC) and builds on the success of last year’s competition. The 2010 competition will see a number of new elements including a category created for large corporations and not-for-profit organisations with 100 employees or more, a “Best New .HK Website Award” given to the most outstanding SME website which has been established no longer than one year as a token of support and encouragement for newly established websites, and public voting on shortlisted ‘.HK’ websites to promote community involvement. The category for SMEs and not-for-profit organisations with less than 100 employees category remains a part of this year’s Competition.
The adoption of social media and online marketing has become inevitable for enterprises of any scale across different industries. According to Nielsen’s latest Online AdRelevance report, spending on online advertising in Hong Kong accelerated in the last quarter of 2009 and peaked at HK$255 million, a year-on-year increase of 22%, contributing to total spending of HK$869 million for the full year.
“The rising popularity of online marketing represents both opportunity and challenge to businesses and the community. With the mission of fostering e-commerce and Internet development in Hong Kong, HKIRC has organised the Top 10 ‘.hk‘ Website Competition for the second year to reward outstanding ‘.hk‘ websites that can be role models for others to learn from,” said Mr. Jonathan Shea, CEO of HKIRC.
The Competition is a unique and effective platform to showcase the benefits and opportunities brought by the Internet and the ‘.hk‘ domain to businesses and organisations, as well as to promote awareness and use of the online platform by the community at large.
Both SMEs and not-for-profit organisations with less than 100 employees, and large corporations and non-profit organisations with 100 employees or more are invited to enter. Judges will rank the entrants based on criteria such as industry innovation, look-and-feel and ease of navigation, interaction, domain innovation and relevance, and contribution to society. The Golden Prize winner of each category will be awarded HK$20,000, in addition to a certificate, trophy and logo exposure on promotional materials. The brand new “Best New .HK Website Award” winner will receive HK$10,000.
The application period for the Competition runs until 12 November 2010. Shortlisted best practices will be open for public voting from 16 to 28 November 2010. Results will be announced on 21 December 2010 and the awards presentation ceremony will be held in early 2011.

Early this year, British cabinet member Andy Burnham told the Daily Telegraph that he was “planning to negotiate with Barack Obama’s incoming American administration to draw up new international rules for English language websites.”Internet domain names (such as www.google.com) are managed hierarchically. At the top of the hierarchy is an entity called IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, operated on behalf of the Commerce Department. The U.S. government therefore has the ultimate authority to review or revoke any decision, or even to transfer control of IANA to a different operator.
Until now, the management of the Domain Name System has been largely apolitical, and most of the disputes that have arisen have been of interest only to insiders and the technology industry. IANA has concerned itself with fairly narrow questions like “Should we allow names ending in .info?” Commercial questions about ownership of names, like other property disputes, are settled in national courts. Political questions like “Who is the rightful government of Pakistan, and therefore the rightful owner of the .pk domain?” are settled by the U.S. Department of State.
There are persistent proposals to break the connection between IANA and the U.S. government. In these schemes, IANA would be directed by some international body, such as the United Nations or the International Telecommunication Union, which coordinates international phone networks. It is unclear what problem such proposals attempt to solve. There have been no serious complaints about American stewardship of the Internet, no actual abuses perpetrated by American overseers. But were we to abdicate this stewardship, a number of difficulties could arise.
